How to select a rectangle

with 7 comments

This tutorial assumes you’ve installed Window Clippings and have already learned how to create your first screenshot.

1. Open Window Clippings and make sure that “Prompt for selection” is selected. Now click the “Create screenshot” button.

2. Notice that the screen dims in preparation for your selection.

3. Simply hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse pointer across the screen to create a rectangle. The resulting rectangle is highlighted to show your selection.

4. If it’s not quite right simply drag the mouse across the screen again to create a new selection. When you’re ready press the Enter key on your keyboard to capture the selection.

  1. This is really simple and straightforward… However what I really miss, is the possibility to move ans resize the selection as it was possible in Window clippings 2. That way users could make a precise selection. This way one has to crop the screenshot in editor later to have it precise.

    • Yes this didn’t make it into the release. We just ran out of time but the plan is to provide all of the version 2 features and more in the 3.1 release. Sorry about that.

  3. I too miss the ability to resize the selection and I’m glad to hear it’ll be coming back in version 3.1. Hope that ships soon!

  4. Hi! I might be missing something, but has the ability to resize a selection made it into version 3.1? I’m running version 3.1.131 and still don’t see the ‘grabbers’ at the edges/corners of a selection!

  5. No, the ability for cropping seems gone forever.

I also believe this software should be for free, it’s not worth the asked amount.

Donation model is better for this kind of software.

    • For now, I don’t have any time to invest in Window Clippings. But there are nevertheless functionalities I’d love to add into WC3 (or maybe WC4); and cropping belongs to them.

I’ve tried the donation model with http://www.creativedocs.net. We have still not reached the total amount of $100 worth of donations, even with hundreds of thousands of downloads, and lots of enthousiastic users. So no, donation is not an option for now.
